How to Grow Brussels Sprouts from Seed
Brussels sprouts are one of those plants that I don’t think many people have seen growing. They are super fun to grow and they are interesting as well. Did you know they grow on stalks? If you have a hankering to try growing this fun vegetable that is a joy to garden and harvest, check out these tips for growing brussels sprouts from seeds.
How to Start Brussels Sprout Seeds Indoors
For brussels sprouts, you will want to start the seeds indoors about 4 weeks before the last frost. You will need a seed starting tray, seed starting mix, and some small ‘poles’ for your plants to grow up.
Start by placing seed starting mix into each container. Press your brussels sprout seeds (2-3) into each section about ½ inch into the soil. Water and place in a warm sunny spot or use growing lights if you don’t have enough sun.
Place a ‘pole’ (a ruler, craft stick, etc works well) in each section. This will help your brussels sprouts seedlings have somewhere to grow that will keep their stalks strong for transplanting later. Seeds should germinate in about a week.
How to Start Brussels Sprout Seeds Outdoors
Ideally, like most plants, direct sowing into the ground is always best. If you live in an area where you can do this, all you need to do is prepare the soil and plant.
To prepare the soil, choose a soil that has clay if it is possible in your area. This will help the plant anchor and stay moist. You will also want to provide lots of nutrients for your sprouts. They are heavy feeders. This can be achieved by mixing compost and a fertilizer that is slower releasing into the soil before you plant seeds.
If possible, try growing your brussels sprouts in a raised bed. This is good for cool weather plants of all types.
Plant seeds ½ inch deep into the soil and plan them to be 3-4 inches apart from each other. Water your seeds and keep the soil moist. Germination should happen in a week or so.
