How to Grow Kohlrabi from Seed
Kohlrabi wasn’t something I had ever tired until just a few years ago. I happened upon some at my local farmer’s market and was curious. I am always looking for ways to make new foods and exciting dishes so I was intrigued by this funny shaped vegetable and all the possibilities. Growing kohlrabi is fun and it is a fall harvest vegetable so it’s a late one that you can enjoy into early winter. Here are some tips for growing kohlrabi from seed either started indoors or outside.
How to Grow Kohlrabi from Seed Indoors
If you are in a shorter growing season, and the ground is still too cold to work, you may want to start your seeds indoors or in a greenhouse. This can be done about 3 weeks before the last frost. To grow kohlrabi from seed indoors, you will need a seed starter tray that is a bit deeper than your typical one. You will also need a seed starting soil mix.
Fill each section with seed starting mix and place 2 seeds into each section. Gently press them into the soil and push down so they are about ¼ inch in. If both seeds germinate, just thin out the weaker one. Water and keep moist until your seeds germinate.
Place your tray in your greenhouse or on a warm spot on the sun in your home. Seeds germinate in about 2 weeks.
How to Grow Kohlrabi from Seed Outdoors
If you are directly sowing your kohlrabi seeds, you will need to prepare your soil first. This is a simple process of adding some nutrients to your soil and not leaving the soil to loose as kohlrabi prefers soil not to be. Choose a site that is in full sun if possible.
Sow seeds (at least 2 of them in each spot) about 8-10 inches apart by just pushing them into the soil. Water kohlrabi and keep it moist throughout the growing season as it needs to to grow healthy and larger.
