Use this guide on how to Grow Spinach from Seed to start your spinach seeds indoors or direct sow them outside in your garden.
How to Grow Spinach from Seed
Growing spinach from seed can be done both indoor and out. While many will warn you against starting seedlings and transplanting them, this is mostly due to a delicate root structure and can be easily managed. If you are wanting to get your seeds started indoors for spinach for an earlier harvest, try starting seeds indoors. Here are some tips for starting spinach from seed.
How to Grow Spinach from Seed Indoors
First, pick the right container. Spinach needs a little deeper of a pot to start in so they can grow long enough taproots and have a good chance to survive transplanting.
You will want a seed starter tray that is at least 3-4 inches deep. The soil you pick should be nutrient rich as spinach needs it to grow properly.
To sow seeds, you don’t need to do anything special if you are starting them indoors. Just use your finger and poke a hole down about ½ inch into the soil. Add 2-3 seeds into the hole and gently cover.
Water (but don’t completely soak) your seeds and place them in a warm (but not hot) spot to germinate and sprout faster. Spinach is a cool weather vegetable and can germinate in temperatures as low as 30 degrees fahrenheit. This is one reason why many choose to just directly sow seeds.
How to Directly Sow Spinach Seeds Outdoors
Because you may live in a warmer area or you are starting later in the season, you may choose to start your spinach seeds outdoors. This is perfectly fine as spinach can be started and actually thrives in cooler temperatures of less than 70 degrees.
If you do choose to direct sow, just start with a nutrient rich, composted added soil. Till to mix the compost in well. Then, plant 2-3 seeds about ½ inch into the soil. You will want to space your seeds out by 4-6 inches each plant. Water, but do not over soak your seedlings.
You should start to see seedlings sprout within a week or less.
