Here is a guide on how to transplant cauliflower seedlings to your vegetable garden.
How to Transplant Cauliflower Seedlings
It is recommended that you start cauliflower seeds indoors because you have a better chance as heartier plants. If you started yours indoors, you probably are wondering how you will transplant them to the ground the best way possible. Here are some tips on how to transplant cauliflower seedlings.
How to Transplant Cauliflower Seedlings
Before transplanting your seedlings outdoors you will need to harden them off. This is a process that is recommended for most seedlings that helps them get used to the outdoor temperatures and elements so they have a better chance at survival.
To start the hardening off process, you will want to take your seedlings out and place them in a protected area such as a porch or deck that can be somewhat protected from the wind. Leave them out for about 2 hours on the first day and then increase time out each day until you have them out overnight. This process can take a week or so.
After hardening off, you can start the process of transplanting your cauliflower seedlings.
How to Gently Transplant Cauliflower Seedlings
First, pick a good spot that receives a good amount of sun for the best plants. While cauliflower can tolerate a little bit of shade, it does grow best in full sun.
You will want to have well fertilized soil for growing the best cauliflower. To do this, mix in a good fertilizer from the store or your own compost before transplanting. Make sure you water your seedlings a little while before you plan to transplant. This will make them easier to remove from the trays.
When ready to transplant your cauliflower seedlings, dig a hole as deep as your seedling ‘pod’ is in the container. You don’t need to plant deep. Gently remove each seedling from its container. Plant each seedling about a foot (12 inches) from each other for best results. If you plant too close, the heads will not get as big.
After planting, keep the soil moist and if there are still cold nights ahead, plan to cover them to protect them.
One word of warning, on where you plant; avoid planting near cabbage or where cabbage was recently grown. The soil will be depleted from it.
