Use these tips to learn how to transplant turnip seedlings this summer.
How to Transplant Turnip Seedlings
Like many root vegetables, turnips need extra care when transplanting the seedlings for growing outdoors. Many people choose to start their seeds indoors because of the shorter growing season in their area. In order to have successful transplanting, make sure to follow these guidelines. Here’s how to transplant turnip seedlings to your garden.
How to Harden Off Turnip Seedlings
Turnips, like many root vegetables need a hardening off in order to be able to be planted in the soil outside after being grown from seed indoors. This helps keep the chance of shocking your plant low.
To harden them off, simply place them outdoors for a short period of time, say 4-6 hours. Make sure they are in a semi-protected area like a covered patio. Take them back inside and the next day, leave them out for a little longer until you are leaving them out overnight.
How to Prepare the Soil For Transplanting Turnip Seedlings
First, choose a good spot. You will want a spot that is full sun most of the day and will be easy to water.
To prepare the soil for transplanting, you will want to mix in some aged compost and till the soil. Dig holes that are just as deep as the containers your seedlings are in. Space them about 6 inches apart and 12 inches apart in rows.
You can also add some 10-10-10 fertilizer to the soil as well.
How to Transplant Turnip Seedlings
Gently remove each seedling and don’t shake off any excess soil. If they don’t come easily, use a butter knife to gently coax each out. You can also wet the soil a bit to help them come loose.
Place each seedling in a hole and gently pat down with extra dirt. Water and keep moist to help them take root in the new soil.
