How to Grow Cauliflower from Seed

Cauliflower is a great vegetable to grow in your garden because it can be used for so much. It is low carb and lends itself well to many recipes. One thing to keep in mind with cauliflower, though; it is not a super easy plant to grow so it may not be great for super beginning gardeners. If you are hoping to take it on, here are some tips on how to grow cauliflower from seed.

How to Grow Cauliflower from Seed Indoors

You can start cauliflower inside, but since it is a cool weather plant, it can be started outside as well. If you are starting inside, here is how to grow cauliflower from seed indoors.

If you are growing for the Spring, start your seeds about 4 weeks before last frost. For fall, start them about 10-12 weeks before the first frost.

Plant seeds in seed starting pots with a seed starting mix. Plant each seed (you can try 2 in each section, but if both germinate and grow, you will need to pinch off the weaker plant) about ½ inch to a ¼ of an inch into the soil.

Get your soil moist, and keep it there. Do not overwater or make it soggy.

Place your seed starts in a sunny spot. A windowsill should be perfect. Your seeds will need to be kept in an area that gets a lot of daylight and keeps the temperature around 70 degrees. They will be ready to transplant outdoors when the temperature outdoors is about 50 degrees consistently during the day and they are 4-6 inches tall.

How to Grow Cauliflower from Seed

The way you grow cauliflower from seed outdoors will be similar to starting seedlings inside. It is recommended that you start indoors if you have the ability and time to do so.

If you start your plants in the ground outdoors, try to do so 4 weeks or so before the last frost in the Spring. Sew them approximately 10-12 inches apart and ½ inch deep per seed. Make sure to plant in soil that is a good mix of fertilizer as cauliflower will require this. Mix compost in with your soil for good results. Aso, make sure to plant in a sunny spot as they need lots of sun to grow well. As with seedlings started indoors, keep the ground moist but not wet.
