Tips for Growing Kale from Seed

Use these directions on how to grow kale from seed. Tips include how to start kale seeds indoors and how to directly sow the seeds outdoors.

Tips for Growing Kale from Seed

Kale is a wonderful plant to grow as it is beautiful and flavorful. Kale grows best in cooler temperatures and can be harvested in spring and early summer as well as fall. Because of its ability to withstand frost, it is a great plant to grow in the late summer for fall Harvest. Due to the nature of it being a coal weather plant, you will often find it in dishes like soups and casseroles. Enjoy growing your own beautiful kale from seed with these tips.

Before you decide to grow kale, first choose a variety. There are several varieties of kale, and they all are about the same growing cycle and will be ready for harvest in about 40-60 days. Also, try to decide if you want to grow indoors or out. Additionally, do not use seeds older than 4 years.

  1. Start 4-6 weeks from the last frost inside for a Spring harvest and 10-12 weeks before the first frost for a Fall harvest.
  2. Use germination trays for good results. Start with a soil-less mixture. Fill the sections almost to the top, leaving about a half an inch.
  3. Place 3 seeds into each section of the tray. Cover with ¼ inch to ½ inch with your growing medium. Water to moisten.
  4. Cover your trays with the plastic covering they come with or with loose plastic wrap. Place your trays in a warm spot. The cool thing about kale is it doesn’t need a whole lot of light to germinate, so even a spot on your kitchen counter will be fine.
  5. Keep your trays moist, but not soupy. This is vital to getting them to grow.

Now, at this point in the process, once you have some little sprouts, you can either plant them indoors in pots to grow or you can get them ready for the outdoors. Check out this post for transplanting kale seedlings.
