Use these instructions to learn how to grow Spaghetti Squash from seed. These gardening tips include directions for starting seeds indoors or directly sowing them into your vegetable garden.

How to Grow Spaghetti Squash from Seed

If you love a vegetable that is versatile for recipes, then spaghetti squash might be just the ticket. Spaghetti squash is a winter squash, so this means that they grow for a very long season and harvest in cooler temperatures in most regions.

How to Grow Spaghetti Squash From Seed

The season is about 100 days from seed to maturity. Because of this, many people opt to start seeds indoors, but you can start them outside if you have a long enough window of time. Here are some tips for growing spaghetti squash from seed.

How to Start Spaghetti Squash Seeds Indoors

Spaghetti squash is best started in pots that are 3 inches or so tall. This makes transplanting them later easier, but it also gives enough space for roots to grow better. You will want to start your seeds about 3-4 weeks before the last frost.

  1. Fill each pot with a seed starting soil mixed with potting soil.
  2. Plant 2-3 seeds per pot about an inch deep in the soil. Cover with soil. Gently water the seeds.
  3. Keep the soil moist and place the pots in a very sunny and warm spot for proper germination, which should happen in 2-3 weeks.

When germination occurs, they will grow multiple true leaves and if you see these leaves, they are ready to be transplanted.

How to Start Spaghetti Squash Seeds Outdoors

Before planting spaghetti seeds outdoors, make sure you prepare the soil. You will want soil that is in a sunny spot and has some added fertilizer to it.  Space out plants about 24 inches apart.

You can start seeds outdoors in a couple of different ways. One of the easiest ways is by creating mounds. This is similar to planting potatoes.

  1. Create a little hill for each plant that you intend to grow.
  2. Place 2-3 seeds into each mound and moisten the soil.
  3. Make sure to keep the soil moist.

You will see germination in about 2 weeks if the soil is warm enough. Soil should be no cooler than 75 degrees.
