How to Transplant Beet Seedlings
If you chose to start your beets indoors, you will eventually need to transplant them outdoors. Typically, root vegetables such as beets or carrots can be a little challenging to transplant due to the root structure being so young at the time. Since this is the part that most people consume, you will want to take heed to these tips on how to transplant beet seedlings before starting.
How to Harden off Beet Seedlings for transplant
All seedlings need to be hardened off but with some of them, you can get away with skipping this step in the transplanting process. Beets are NOT one of these. Because beet seedlings are so tender, they absolutely need this time to get ready to live outdoors permanently.
Hardening off is a simple process. When your seedlings are about 6 weeks old, take them outside in a covered area such a patio, for periods of time from a couple of hours a day and work your way up in time from there. Ultimately, you will want them to be outside a full 24-48 hours before you transplant them into your garden.
How to Prepare the Soil for Transplanting Beets
Beets are very simple to care for when it comes to soil. They are one of the easiest vegetables to grow, actually, and are not too finicky. You will just need soil that has some aged compost added to it and mixed in.
Pick a place that has full sun most of the time and in an area that is easy to keep them moist.
How to Transplant Beet Seedlings
After preparing the soil, make sure to plant your seedlings about 6-8 inches apart. Start by gently removing each seedling from it’s section in the tray or pot. If you need help, try gently wedging a trowel or butter knife to help lift it. You can also try a bit of water.
Dig holes just as big as the size of the seedling tray’s spots.
Do not shake off the excess soil. The roots are tender and need the extra. You will shock your plants if you shake them. Place each seedling into a hole and gently pat down with more soil. Water right away, but do not soak.
