Use these tips to learn how to transplant or move potato plants
There may be a couple of reasons you want to move your potato plants. Maybe you started them in containers in a greenhouse and now you want them in the ground. Or, perhaps you simply planted them in an area you no longer want them. Whatever the reason, you can definitely move them with a little bit of care. Here are some tips for transplanting and moving potato plants.
How to Transplant or Move Potato Plants
First, just like when planting new plants, you will need to prepare the soil. Remove rocks and make sure the soil has plenty of loose, well-draining soil that is rich in nutrients with a compost.
Dig holes that are a little bit larger than the hills your potatoes are already growing in. If your plants are in containers, dig holes bigger than these. You will want the holes at least 8 inches deep and six inches wide. Moisten the soil before planting.
If you have been growing your potatoes in a greenhouse, you will need to harden off your plants before placing them outside. Simply move them outdoors for a bit (if they are in containers) more each day to get them used to the temperatures and elements. You will have them hardened off when you are able to leave them overnight.
If growing in containers, you may need some help to transplant. If not, you will need to dig around each plant by making slices. Make sure to not slice too close to the plants you are transplanting or you may harm them. To remove your potatoes from containers, stick a shovel into the side and tap to loosen.
Move each plant to the transplant homes and cover with composted soil. Don’t pack the soil down too hard as you still want it to remain loose. Water well, but do not soak the soil.
